for the second time in just three days, a small community is cleaning up. a violent night in san francisco leaves one man dead, what police tell us about the investigation this morning. we're also going to take you live to oakland. there it is, the starting line of the city's running festival. good morning, and welcome

to mornings on 2. it is sunday, march 27. >> what about that cold? let's get right to it. >> we saw a bit of clearing in the overnight hours and we're waking up a little colder. a little chilly this morning. we're expecting just a very weak storm to move through today, going to stop this very quickly, and show you the north bay, perhaps a few light sprinkles, maybe a little drizzle over santa rosa, maybe petaluma. we're turning the corner, we'll talk more about that coming up in just a little bit. topping our news this morning, the damage and clean up capital. now that the rain is finally easing, the coastal town has a lot of work ahead. we want to take you right now to capitolla. you can see all the debris along the main area in the

village area. that is all the stuff they've been pushing aside to get it into the street. there's still a lot of water in the area, they've been cleaning up since yesterday. what you're seeing is because of a failed drainage pipe. we want to show you what it looked like when the water was rushing through the town. at this point, it's still too early to tell if those homes can be repaired. the people that live there say this weekend's water was worse than the flooding on thursday, and worse than any flooding in recent memory. >> let me tell you, it was way worse than thursday. the water was up to door level, instead of just the ground

level, about a foot. this was probably closer to three feet. >> the city council is going to hold an emergency meeting at 1:30 this afternoon at city hall. they are expected to make an emergency proclamation. also in santa cruz county this morning, highway 9 remains closed due to the flood waters. this video from yesterday shows standing water on the road, making it quitetive for cars to get by -- quite difficult for cars to get by. there is no estimated time on when highway 9 could reopen. an update to a story ktvu has been falling all weekend long. east bay homeowners are out of their homes this morning, and more could be on their way out as a landslide continues to move. it is happening in san pablo between wyman, and hillcrest. now three homes in the neighborhood are yellow tagged. that means residents can't go inside at night.

the walker family at the top, and the gibbons family at the bottom decided they needed to evacuate as well. >> i opened up my backdoor and i saw this. that's our pear tree. >> some of the homeowners are wondering if some of the repair work is responsible for the landslide. thousands of people are starting to line up downtown. al lie rasmus join us live. >> reporter: we're expecting to see runners making their way towards us. white right now, we're on telegraph and 49th street. one of about a dozen different

neighborhoods runners in this neighborhood will get to see along the route. first, let's show you what it looks like at the start of the race. we have photographer rick lee standing by at 14th and broadway in downtown oakland, with these live pictures. in all, 7300 people are signed up for today's events. that includes the marathon, half marathon, and other relays. they come from 35 different states across the country. six different countries. when i spoke to the event organizers, he says the goal is to make this event a destination. city leaders say that is a good thing, all of those participants and runners bring money to the city. the city report estimated that last year's marathon bumped more than $2 million into the oakland economy. this year, they have 900 more

participants. this is all going to get going about a half hour from now. we'll check in with you guys then. here is a look at the route for the marathon. runners start near lake mare, east then towards the oakland hills, and south along highway 13, and eventually back west towards international boulevard. runners circle around lake mare before crossing the finish line. we start with a live look in oakland. you can see a mix of clouds and sunshine this morning. we are definitely seeing some of the sunshine for today. partly to mostly cloudy skies in store for the afternoon. it looks like the north bay getting perhaps just a little bit of light rain ahead of the main front. areas around santa rosa,

petaluma, and into napa. perhaps the golden gate bridge seeing a little light rain at this time. and cooler this morning. areas in oakland, and san francisco, checking in the upper 40s, lower 50s. here's the system bringing light rain to the northern corner of california. again, looking at just a little bit of sprinkle activity. this is a weaker storm, looking at a tenth of an inch or less to areas south. and looking at north of the golden gait to get from a tenth to a quarter of an inch. maybe half an inch in some cases around santa rosa. if i roll you through your day, notice it takes until 1:00, 2:00, before the rain starts approaching our area. it will be light for the north bay. into the evening hours, we begin to watch it head into san francisco, as well as oakland. and it does stick around for the evening. we are going to be dry by tomorrow morning. and again, some light at the end of the tunnel with clearing and partly cloudy skies. and a warm up expected for next

week. so for today, are you headed out to the running fest? we are expecting 48 degrees at 8:00. 57degrees with partly cloudy, mostly cloudy skies by noon time. upper 50s, low 60s. 60 expected in concord. 58 san ma dayo. santa cruz picked up two inches of rain with the latest storm. your forecast here we go. we've got some nice weather ahead of us. we're looking at 59 degrees for the afternoon today. slight chance for showers remaining for today. by tomorrow, drying out, temperatures bouncing back into the upper 60s, 74 expected on thursday. overnight lows [ inaudible ] all right, thanks rosemary. coming up in overnight news.

san francisco police are looking for the person responsible for a deadly shooting. officers were called to third and mariposa this morning. his friend told officers he had been shot. an ambulance took the man to the hospital, where he later died. one other person was also shot the at parking lot. that person's condition is not known this morning. more signs of trouble in the oakland police department. the chief asked the city for an additional $10.5 million to finish instituting court ordered reforms of the department. the city has asked the chief to cut 15% from his budget. in another sign of discord, rank and file officers reportedly chose a sergeant who had been fired for dishonesty as officer of the year.

the air strike military targets which include libyan army tanks have given a boost to rebel forces. the opposition is making its way west towards tripoli. tomorrow, president obama is planning a televised address to the nation. emergency workers stormed out the fukushima dai-ichi radiation plant, after they thought radiation had sparked 10 million times higher than normal. they later apologized saying the numbers were inaccurate. the employees were struggling to pump contaminated water from the plant, when some of them noticed the reading. while the water was contaminated with radiation, the extremely high reading was a mistake. officials are in the process of taking another reading for better accuracy. radiation from that damaged nuclear power plant is now

being detected thousands of miles away in nevada. a monitoring station in las vegas detected trace amounts this week. officials stress the radiation detected does not pose any risk to human health. coming up, we're going to give you a look why it may be tough to drive around this morning. if you love to get online with the "new york times," you might want to read up today. tomorrow is going to cost you. taking a live look outside at the bay bridge toll plaza. things are moving smoothly. roads for the first time in a while are dry.

getting out early, grab your jacket. all the rain has pushed san rafael's rainfall over the normal. here's a gorgeous look at the sunrise. it's dry right now, but the rain, thursday, friday, and saturday, actually helped to fill the city's rainfall average for the season. past the normal 30 year average. so far, san jose has averaged 13.48 inches of rain. the normal average is only about 13.25 inches. so yes, we passed it. this year's number still hasn't passed last year's number of 13.53 inches. the head of the oakland school district apologized for handing out pink slips to teachers. a town hall meeting to discuss public school funds in oakland. smith said one issue is 80% of the district's budget is from the state, and no state budget is currently in place. but he offered up another

issue, he think is behind the lack of funding in state education. >> the more diverse the state has become, the less well funded education has become. it's one of the clearest examples of structural racism in the united states. >> reporter: in all, they delivered 650 pink slips. time now, 7:14. millions of retired, and disabled people in the u.s. will face another year without an increase in social security payment. the government is declaring a slight cost of living adjustment next year, which would be the first increase since 2009. for midwest people, rising medicare premiums will wipe out any in race in social security. by law, people who receive both medicare, and social security, have their medicare premiums deducted each month. the awards program was

designed to help pg and e manage gas flow in the winter, following the deadly explosion. the utility says it sent $25 cards to 150,000 customers. a vintage lamborghini is being blamed for a garage fire inside a home in detroit. an explosion occurred. the resulting fire ended up spreading through the entire home. >> the garage is completely destroyed. the first level of the had a home is completely destroyed by fire. the heavy smoke coming from the first level of the house, and obviously from the garage area. >> the fire officials are trying to determine what exactly inside the lamborghini sparked the explosion. the owner of the home had just sold the property. no one was hurt in the fire. in georgia, there is concern that high winds could cause three burning wildfires to spread to new areas. a nursing home was evacuated in

savannah yesterday as a precaution. in all, the three fires have burned more than 30,000 acres and three homes. the governor has declared a state of emergency. technicians have fixed a computer glitch at alaska airlines. 12,000 passengers were affected by the cancelations. here in the bay area, san jose airport spokesperson said alaska canceled three flights to seattle, but there were no reports of cancelations at the oakland, and san francisco airports. the company blamed the glitch on a system upgrade. tomorrow, customers flying on the nonstop flight out of hawaii, will be greeted by a party. today is the last full day readers of the new york time can read unlimited stories on the website for free. starting tomorrow, the paper is going to start a digital

i want to take you back live now to downtown oakland. that's the mayor of oakland, she just wrapped up her opening remarks. this half marathon, and full marathon are just about ready to get underway at any minute. an estimated 7300 runners. a 900 increase from last year are expected to participate in this running festival. that's lasted throughout the weekend. today is the actual half marathon, and marathon race. as a result of this race, several street closures in oakland will be throughout the day. road blocks are going to be in place throughout the city until at least 3:00 p.m. again, the race set to get

underway at any moment. time now, 7:21. get ready to dig deeper into your wallet. sales tax rates are hitting the double-digits in some bay area cities, starting on april 1. consumer, experts say it could mean a rush on big ticket items. >> reporter: some consumers may be persuaded to hurry up and buy before it goes into the place. >> some consumers are going to rationalize getting things now to save that 1%. i think there will be some sneaking in purchases because of the sales tax increase. >> reporter: the hike will go into effect on april 1 in several bay area cities. tax rates at 10:00% our higher. kate says any short term boom

this week will be overshadowed by a long term effect on spending. >> that 10% mark, it's a threshold for consumers. once it tops 10%, i think it will consider their spending. they will consider the role of tax in their purchases more than they have in the past. so i don't think it's good news for retailers. >> we want to give you a look at the cities where the sales tax rates are increasing. el cerrito to 10.25%. concord goes up a half% to 9.75%. the day that many britney spears fans have been waiting for is finally here. the pop star will take the stage at noon today on van nuys avenue. the free concert was originally going to be outdoors in the castro district, but it was moved indoors, because of concerns about the wet weather. the tickets again are free. but take a look at what we

found this morning. people selling their free tickets online for a profit. one person asking as much as $300 for a ticket. apple's ipad 2 has been out for more than two weeks, and the tablet computer is still hard to come by. this is the line earlier this week out of the apple store near san francisco's union square. so people are waiting overnight in hopes to get their hands on that gadget. it is estimated ipadses on the black market can sell for more than three times the retail price, but it could be a risky purchase. >> there's no recourse if the thing breaks. if it's defective, if it breaks down, you're really stuck. >> the devices are also popular, proven to be popular

in russia and china, where they're very hard to find in storms. a lot of spring fever to be felt later in the week, but today, we're still dealing with the possibility of clouds, and rain. take a look at san francisco this morning, sitting in the upper 40s. for the afternoon, the possibility of a few sprinkles. this morning, a few clouds. with rain embedded, still hanging over areas around santa rosa, you can see the north bay, perhaps a drizzle this morning. but the main event will come later today. take a look at some of these rainfall totals from yesterday. anywhere from a half inch to nearly an inch in areas. napa, santa rosa, kentville tick picked up more than 2 inches. capitolla picked up almost 2.35 inches. areas around oakland looks hike a half inch. .8 in san francisco. today's storm is a weak one.

just the tail end brushing over our area. the farther south you go, the less of a chance you're going to get some. but we're leaving in a sprinkle for pretty much the entire area. upper 50s. a lot like yesterday. by tomorrow, we're dry, and temperatures warming into the low 60s. gets even better. tuesday into wednesday, mid- upper 60s, low 70s. overnight lows cool, but not too bad in the low, mid, and upper 40s. seven people in new york state are a lot richer this morning, after picking the winning numbers to friday's huge mega millions jackpot. they work for the new york state homes office in albany. together, they're going to divide the prize. after taxes, each person is going to take home about $29 million. the owner of the store says he's certainly excited about the news. >> my son called me, and let me

you are looking live at downtown oakland, as the marathon is just seconds from getting underway. an estimated 73, 7400 people sent to run the marathon. claudine, you've been a participant. >> the great thing about it, as you leave that start line, and go across the route, there are people in the community out

waiting for you at all different parts of that route. it really makes you feel like you're seeing another side of oakland, sometimes than what hits headlines. that's why they like this festival so much. it's an economic boone for the city. the way for the city to put its best foot forward. and the crowd has been great. luckily, they don't have any rain. >> weather cooperating, you talk about that economic boone. i know the mayor is saying, the race is expected to bring in at least $2 million to the city of oakland. she hopes more participants will flock to oakland, that people from other states will start traveling here to oakland to run this race. >> they want to make it a qualifier. we know a lot of people have come from across the country already to run in this race. we should mention for the people, trying to get in and around oakland, it was an issue. it was the first time they had the race in over two decades. so people got a little stuck

trying to prove around this route, which goes through the city streets. a lot of police officers trying to direct traffic. once the parade of runners starts going, it's hard to break through. >> i've never run a marathon, been more of a one mile, two mile guy. the people in the front, those obviously, the most competitive racers? >> yes, you let the people who really are going to get some great times out in the front. i tend to be towards the back. then all the way through. but that's going to get started underway. we do have multiple crews out watching that running festival, and continue to give you updates throughout the morning on mornings on 2. a wild weekend in the city of capitola. this morning, cleanup is underway again. again, they were cleaning up a couple of days ago. another flood, and now another clean up. >> we want to take you right to that story. this again, is one day after

that floating hit that small coastal community. these are live pictures of the mess that is still out there this morning. you can see cardboard. we saw a staircase in the street yesterday. there's rugs. it really is a mess. this is all thanks to this pipe that broke yesterday. the heavy rains came, and everyone said it really came just so quickly. there was very little they could do but watch it rush through the town. saturday's flooding ended up damages several businesses, and mobile homes. joining us live now is one of those homeowners. thanks for joining us this morning. >> thank you. >> so tell us the situation with your home. how did your home survive this flood? >> well, actually this is the first time. i belt the house in '78, it's the first time i ever got water inside. i got probably four or five

inches on the first floor. my garage is flooded. the driveway is full of mud. me and my daughter are cleaning it up. >> describe it. everything we've heard it's had this chocolate colored water, and really a mess. >> i left before i got in the house. i was here until noon yesterday, when it started coming into the garage, and they advised us to evacuate. it went through the house. my whole front yard was like a swimming pool. >> i even see behind you, all of the stuff that is still sitting on the side of this. the imagine declaration expected today. how long do you think it will take you guys to get back out to normal today? >> i don't know about the risk to the city. myself, i'll probably be up and running within about a week or so. >> do you think insurance is going to help you with this?

>> no. i don't have flood insurance. so it's all on me. >> how is this community coming together? everyone obviously knows each other. how is it coming together, and trying to deal with this? >> well, i think everybody is working together. i had people helping me, and the fire department helped a lot. i got a lot of help from them. they brought me sandbags. everyone is pulling together in capitola. >> it is a big mess out there. the pictures are unbelievable, and hopefully you guys get a few days of sunshine to clean up from that mess and we hope your house is okay. >> we're a family of survivers here. >> thanks so much for joining us this morning. >> all right, thank you. rain soaked hillsides are also creating a danger of land slides in mill valley. three homes were evacuated on ethyl avenue after a portion of

the hillside gave way. one woman said she was inside her home when she saw a small tree moving outside her window. >> like the whole side of my hill was mud, and i heard all of this water running. >> mill valley officials have ordered residents to stay out of their homes until a soil engineer evaluates whether it is safe to go back inside. the homeowners have been warned it may be necessary to build a retaining wall to save their houses. two cars have been damaged after a rockslide in san francisco. two cars near 12th avenue and quintara street were hit. a san mateo county road is still closed after a landslided. it happened yesterday on wood ridge road in hillsboro. police say wood ridge road will have to be closed for the next

few days. and for up to the minute weather, including live stormtracker radar, and road closures, be sure to visit ktvu.com and click on that storm watch tab. thousands of people are pounding the pavements of oakland streets and all headed towards allie rasmus. >> reporter: we're expected to see about a hundred runners making their way towards us. let's show you live pictures of the start of the race. this race just began minutes ago. participants in this race come from 35 different states, and 6 different countries. these runners will get to tour about a dozen or so different neighborhoods in the city of oakland along their 26-mile

route from fruitvale to the diamondville district. one says she's very glad that the city gets to show off today. >> there's a lot of good in oakland. that's what we want people to see because it is a plus place. >> reporter: let's show you again, the live picture of the start of the marathon. again, 1400 people are taking part in the marathon. but the running festival doesn't just include the marathon. there's also a half marathon, and relays. 7300 people have signed up to take part in the events today. the goal is to make this festival a destination event. city leaders are obviously very happy about that. when all of these people come to town, they end up spending money here, and pumping money into the local economy. a report estimated last year, that the marathon pumped about

$2 million into the local economy. this year there are 900 more people. if we take you back out here live to where we are. three miles into the race route, i want to point out one other thing. the police vehicle that you see out here, all the expenses associated with putting on the race, it's about $180,000. but the city of oakland is not paying for a cent of it. all of those are being covered by the race organizers. that is obviously, another economic benefit here. we should start seeing the runners head towards us. >> as we mentioned, we want to give you the race route. one of them includes a full marathon. runners from the start lake merritt. before going south along highway 13, back west towards international boulevard.

the runners are going to circle around lake merritt before hitting the finish line. ♪ [ music ] good morning to you, heading outdoors this morning, overcast skies. a live look in oakland. waking up a little cooler than yesterday. later today, it may need to be waterproof. picking up a few light turns. over petaluma, and into napa. we continue with the cloudy conditions, and you can see moisture embedded within those clouds. a little bit over danville a little earlier. but most of this not necessarily hitting the ground. eventually, we are expecting light rain throughout the day. nothing like we saw the last few days. but enough to bring a tenth of an inch to the north bay. the winds are light this morning, coming in from the southeast between 3 and 5 miles per hour. the time lapse here is about 12

hours. yesterday's storm pushing off. mainly dry this morning. we're watching sort of the brunt over the north corner of california. a few sprinkles popping up over our area as well. we're looking at a nice big change. a drier pattern, setting up as early as tomorrow. for today, we're going to remain unsettled in your forecast here for the north bay, it could roll in early afternoon, by about 4:00 or so, it looks like we're seeing light, steady rain. it takes until 5 or 6:00 before it rolls south of the golden great bridge. we wake up monday morning, and we're mainly dry. a look at the temperatures outside or door. san jose, 40 degrees in your neighborhood. partly cloudy skies. 49 right in in san francisco. fran highs for today, -- afternoon highs today, a lot

like yesterday. upper 40s, lower 50s. the possibility of low 60s, then we begin to warm up as early as tomorrow. 62 the afternoon high. overnight lows don't change much. but take a look at the warm up expected by wednesday and thursday. 74 on thursday. if you're headed out to the oakland running fest, we'll have your day planner coming up for you in just a little bit. checking in on the roadways in the lake tahoe area, chains are still required on interstate 80, and highway 50. here's a look at how the snow looked in nevada county. several feet of new powder is on the ground. los gatos resident, john olson says his two and a half story vacation home is buried under all of that snow. >> i would say it's probably about 8, 10 feet deep in front of the house. not sure how i'm going to get

in there. >> in soda springs, cars are driving on roads that have become snow canyons. police in south lake tahoe are investigating the mysterious death of a woman at a community college. she was found seated in a chair at lake tahoe community college on friday. police believe she may have been dead for several hours, before a staff member realized she wasn't breathing and called 911. the cause of her death is still under investigation. in pleasantton, under orders not to drink the tap water after a landslide damaged the water main. some have no water at all, others have weak pressure. residents in the area have been told again, not to drink the tap water until all the repairs are completed. the recent rains have hit the bay area, now being blamed for a weekend sewage spill in the

city of sonoma. it happened yesterday just off north side avenue and pine avenue. water officials say that's where 1800 gallons of sewage overflowed from a manhole, and ended up flowing into the nearby sonoma creek. water officials say it should not poise a health threat. a pittsburgh man is being called a hero after saving three women trapped in a burning home. that fire broke out on east 12th street. he ended up getting all three women out of the house, including an 84-year-old woman, and a 90-year-old woman. all three women are injured, but are expected to survive. a big weekend in the barry bonds trial. coming up, we'll be talking to a legal analyst about the case so far, and the star prosecution witness expected to take the stand tomorrow. let's take you outside. this is the three mile mark of the oakland running festival

good morning, michael. >> reporter: good morning. >> we've looked at this list of people we know are probably going to testify next. tomorrow, everyone is looking at his former girlfriend, kimberly bell. what do you expect her to say, and do you expect it to have an impact on the jury? >> reporter: i think it will have some impact. there are eight women on this jury. kimberly bell is going to get up and talk about her relationship with barry, and the fact that she had an affair with him. not sure how that's going to sit with those eight women. she will talk about her relationship with barry that started somewhere around '94. how they went out. she'll take about the changes in his body. the defense will drag out that barry had given her money, maybe a thousand dollars to buy a house down in arizona, and she wanted 100,000 to finish that house payment off, and

barry refused to give it to her. the defense is going to paint her as someone that has a motive, and that's to get even with barry. >> let's say you're sitting next to barry bonds tomorrow. looking across the aisle. do you think the prosecution has put forward a solid case to date? >> reporter: to date they have. last week, when the drug expert, the expert on the drugs that barry took, or allegedly took was on the stand, he talked about the effects of the drugs. barry has said through his attorney as an opening state, barry did take, what he thought was not the clear and the cream. what strikes me is, okay, if you took it, then you took steroids. you may not have known. why the big deal about chasing down the fact that these, the growing of the head, the hands,

the feet getting bigger. why aren't they going after that? unless they're trying to tell the jury he didn't take the steroids, which no one is going to believe. >> there's no way that he couldn't have known that he was taking some kind of steroid. >> reporter: i think that's going to be clear to the jury. how do you not know? one of the things that's going to jump out, when giambi gets up there, they're going to say when talking about greg anderson. greg gave us to giambi, he gave us the clear and the cream, we know those to be steroids. the government in arguing to the jury will be able to stand up and say, look, can't we infer that bonds must have known? why would anderson not tell his best client that the clear and the cream were steroids? do you really believe barry didn't know when giambi knew? >> do you put barry on the

stand? >> reporter: you can't. if he gets up there, and he gets convicted of any one of those countses, and the judge believes he committed perjury, she will put him in jail, not give him the home detention or the weekends. they've got to keep him off the witness stand. >> live in the ktvu newsroom. i appreciate your time michael. >> reporter: you're welcome. a man who confessed to shooting the oakland journalist will return to the witness stand. a key witness in the two men accused of plotting the killing,. jurors in the attempted murder trial of a former hillsdale student. he brought pipe bombs and other webs to the campus two years ago. his defense attorney says he

a pilot is dead, crashing his vintage airplane in front of spectators. photos showed the russian military trainer aircraft going down, then crashing into the ground, resulting in the huge fireball. >> the other plane kept flying down, and just flew into the ground. probably at a 40-degree angle. we just assumed he maybe was unconscious. >> federal investigators are now if florida to figure out what led to the crash. the power is back on in yosemite park. all roads are now open, bus service to the park is scheduled to resume today. hundreds of people living along a stretch of the big sur

clipped by the tail end. we could see a little bit of rain. our models will show you in a few minutes. thousands of people are taking part. allie rasmus is live along the marathon front. >> reporter: you can see all of these runners behind us. made their way down telegraph avenue. there are hundreds of people running down this route. this is on mile parker 3 of the oakland marathon race route. evenly at this early hour, we have some people from the neighborhood cheering these runners on. let's talk to karen hester. you're a 13 year resident of the neighborhood. you have a sign out here, showing your neighborhood pride. what do you think an event like this does for oakland's image? >> it's great for oakland's image. it brings people here from all over the country. all of the runners get to run

through different neighborhoods of oakland. >> they do get to see a variety of locations. diamond district. west oakland. fruitvale. obviously you have your favorite. >> yeah, we're cheering them on, they're looking great. it's a great group of people. >> reporter: we'll let you get back to cheering on your friends out here. karen talked about it a little bit. that's one of the goals of this event, to showcase oakland in a positive light. there's not just the marathon here, but also a half marathon, and relay rays going on. the people you see in this race right now come from 35 different states. 6 different countries. when people come for events like this, they end up spending money. last year's marathon pumped

about $2 million into the local economy. this year, there's some very excited people out here. this event has 900 more people than they did last year, so obviously, they're expecting the payoff to be even bigger. we'll check back with you guys about a half hour from now. allie is located at mile marker three. here is a look at the entire route. right now, headed north towards rockridge, and eventually east toward the oakland hills. south along highway 13, and west toward international boulevard. runners will circle around lake merritt before crossing the finish line. several streets are closed. we have a link to them on ktvu.com. news from overnight. san francisco police are looking for the person responsible for a deadly shooting. officers were called to third and mariposa in the mission

bay avenue. that's where they found a man who later died. one other person was shot in that parking lot, but that person as condition is not known this morning. damage and cleanup in capitola. now that rain is finally easing up. the coastal town has a lot of work ahead. looking live at pictures from capitola, located on the santa cruz county coastline. this morning, there is still a very muddy mess on the streets there in that town where several feet of water roared there yesterday for the second time in three days. it's thanks to that broken drainage pipe that first collapsed on thursday. this is what it looked like when the water rushed through the town, a little more than 24 hours ago. saturday's flooding damaged 43 mobile homes. at this point, it's too early to figure out if those homes

can be repaired. this weekend's water was worse than the flooding on thursday, and worse than any other flooding in recent memory. >> let me tell you, it was way worse than thursday. the water was up to door level instead of just to the ground level about a foot. now this was literally probably closer to three feet. >> the capitola city council will hold an emergency meeting at 1:30 this afternoon at city hall in capitola. they are expected to make an emergency proclamation. also in santa cruz this morning. highway 9 remains closed due to the flood waterer. this is video of the standing water on the road. right now, the closure effect effects the stretch of road between paradise park an the coast. there is no estimated time on when highway 9 could reopen. an update to a story ktvu has been following all morning

long. a landslide continues to move. it's all happening in san pablo between wyman and hillcrest. heavy rain on thursday triggered the slide. now three homes in the neighborhood are yellow tagged. residents are not allowed inside at night. at the top of the hill, the walker family spent all day yesterday packing up their home. the gibbons family decided they needed to evacuate as well. >> i opened up my backdoor, and i saw this. this is my pair tree. it used to be way up here. it's almost to the eve of the house. that's where we say we know it's time to go. >> some of the homeowners are wondering if repair work that followed previous landslides may be responsible. in pleasanton, under an order not to drink the tap water after a land slight damaged a water main there.

crews installed a bypass yesterday, and hope to have a permanent fix by tomorrow. residents in the area have been told not to drink the tap water until all the repairs are completed. damage across the bay area after this most recent storm. in sonoma county, the roads are drying out, after the rains left some of them impassable. some had to turn back in santa rosa. others just plowed on through. more than two feet of water covered that roadway. in sonoma, traffic was very slow there. the highway and todd road were parts of closed by heavy runoff mudslides, or downed trees. good morning to you, a live look at the south bay for you this morning, waking up with mostly cloudy skies. saw partly cloudy skies in the overnight hours. that allowed us to cool. as you get out the door this

morning, we're chillier by 5:00, 10 degrees. stormtracker 2, the next storm already moving ashore. the north corner of california. this system taking a northerly trek as it moves through. we will catch just the tail end. we are seeing light rain falling in areas over the north bay, getting in just a little bit rate around richmond as well as san rafael, and sausalito. it's going to take most of the day before we see it along the south bay. just a light breeze, anywhere from 3 to 5 miles per hour in most cases, and calm right now in santa rosa. running you through your forecast, it takes until about 2:00 or 3:00 before we see it over the north bay. this model being a little shy. we are expecting to see it arrive by that time.

we do remain unsettled through the night. by monday, we begin to see the big transition. today, partly cloudy, to mostly cloudy skies. areas around san jose, maybe just a few hundredths out of this. the north bay could see one two two tenths. 45 in santa rosa. afternoon highs, going to feel like yesterday. 59 expected in berkely. 60 for oakland today. one more day of cloudy, soggy, dreary weather, then we see the big change. come monday, we're drying out, and warming up just a bit. overnight lows remain in the 40s. take a look at the highs in and around wednesday, we are going to warm up to about 70 degrees.

francisco are once again calling for a change of government in yemen. yesterday's event drew several hundred people to the u.n. plaza. one demonstrator told us, the group is trying to send a message to the obama administration to end support for yemen's government. >> we want a peaceful transition of the government. we want the president to leave immediately, and give a chance for the other people, and for the young people to take over. and to establish a better constitution, and establish better law and order. >> after the rally, the union marched down market street, calling for support of the uprising in yemen. the head of the oakland school district has apologized for handing out pink slips to teachers. a town hall meeting yesterday

>> i built the house in '78. it's the first tomb i ever got water inside. my garage is flooded. the driveway is full of mud. me and my daughter are cleaning it up. >> this is what it looked like when the water rushed through capitola yesterday. residents there tell us this is the worst storm damage the town has suffered in memory. this morning, thousands of people are pounding the pavement of oakland streets. alley rasmus has been live along the marathon route all morning long, and joins us live with the latest. >> they were running pretty fast. most of the 1400 people who had signed up for the marathon have come and gone. we're on mile marker 3 of the race route. we're pretty early on in the race. let's show you what it looked like just an hour ago, when it all began. our cameras were there. a lot of cheering, and excited, animated people making their way down that race route.

they have a long way to go. it goes through a dozen or so different neighborhoods in oakland. from fruitvale to west oakland. the point is to showcase oakland in a positive light. they hope to make this a destination event. organizers tell us 7300 people have signed up for all of today's events. not just the marathon, also a half marathon, and some relays taking place. the people that we saw this morning running come from 35 different states, six different countries. city leaders are happy about all of that participation. when people travel here, they under up spending money at local businesses. last year's marathon pumped $2 million into the local economy. that is a benefit for the city, as well as helping the city's image. there are a lot of police officers and city personnel in charge of traffic control and

little bit. thanks. the roan soaked hillsides are creating danger of landslides in mill valley. one woman says she was in her home when she saw a small tree moving outside of her window. >> like the whole side of my hill was mud coming down. i heard all of this water running. >> mill valley officials have ordered residents to stay out of their homes until a soil engineer can evaluate whether it's safe to go back inside. a san mateo county road is still closed this morning after a landslide. it happened just off of crystal springs road. no buildings were damaged. police say the road will be closed for the next few days. two cars have been damaged after a rockslide in san francisco. two large boulders broke off a

when he told a grand jury that he never knowingly took steroids. if convicted, he could face a wide range of penalties. this week is also supposed to be crucial in the chauncey bailey murder trial. the man who confessed to shooting the oakland judgist is expected to detail bailey's killing this week. a -- jurors in the attempted murder trial of a former hillsdale student are expected to deliberate today. he is accused of trying to kill his teachers when he brought pipe bombs a few years ago. jurors have been deliberating since wednesday. san francisco will join the nation in standing with japan tomorrow. vigils are planned in cities tomorrow night.

tomorrow is also the 32nd anniversary of the three mile island meltdown in pennsylvania. pacific gas and electric has started rewarding customers on the peninsula and san francisco who cut back on natural gas use after the deadly san bruno explosion. the utility has started sending $25 gift cards to people who reduced their spending in september. a member of our ktvu staff got her card in the mail, and shared it with us. the utility says it sent the cards to 150,000 customers. time now, 8:39. thousands of people are expected to turn out for a free britney spears concert. the marquis is already up at the bill graham auditorium. the concert does again at noon. the pop star is going to be

cleaning up. once again after water flooded the streets for the second time in three days. the capitola city officials have told us they called an emergency meeting for 1:30 this afternoon. they also said it is during that meeting they are expected to make an emergency proclamation. a pilot is dead after crashing his vintage plane at an air show in front of spectators. the crash happened yesterday in florida at an air show near daytona beach. the photos taken show the russian military trainer aircraft going down, then crashing into the ground resulting in a huge fireball. >> the other plane just kept flying down, and just flew into the ground, probably at a 40- degree angle. me and my friend were watching it, and we just assumed he maybe was unconscious. >> federal investigators are now in florida to figure out what led up to that crash.

in miami, flights are still being canceled four days after a fire hit the airport. wednesday's fire damaged the airport's fuel pump operations, so planes had to be fueled using tanker trucks. hundreds of flights have been canceled because of that fire. a vintage lamborghini is being blamed for a higher in a destroyed a michigan home outside of detroit. the man was trying to start his lamborghini in the garage when there was a fire. >> heavy smoke coming from the first level of the house, and obviously the garage area. >> fire are officials are trying to determine what sparked that explosion. the owner of the home had just sold the property. no one was hurt in the fire.

a pittsburgh man is called a hero after saving a woman trapped in a burning home. he got all three women out of the house, including an 84-year- old woman, and a 90-year-old woman. all three women were injured, but they are expected to survive. police in south lake tahoe are investigating the death of a woman at a community college. the woman was seated in a chair at lake tahoe community college friday. police say she may have been dead several hours before a staff member noticed she wasn't breathing, and called 911. the cause of her death is still under investigation. a big wave surfer will be remembered today. there is supposed to be a paddle out this afternoon in his memory. he was knocked down by a wave

last week, and two waves that followed prevented him from resurfacing. apple's ipad 2 has been out for weeks and it's still hard to come by. this was the line earlier this week outside union square. some people are waiting overnight all in hopes of getting their hands on that gadget. many are fueling an underground black market. it's estimated ipads on the black market can sell for more than three times the retail price. a purchase could be risky. >> there's no recourse if the thing breaks. you captain go back to apple, or the store, -- can't go back to apple or the store. still a lot of gray skies out there, still rain, but sun is also coming. >> one more dreary day.
